Students will investigate how structures can reduce the effects of sunlight on the Earth’s surface. Students will use recycled materials to design a structure to reduce the effects of sunlight. Students will work in small groups to design and construct their structure. Finally, students will test their structures outside in the sun and record their findings.

5 ) Construct a model of a natural habitat (e.g., terrarium, ant farm, diorama) conducive to meeting the needs of plants and animals native to Alabama.

This learning activity should be used after a lesson or unit on animals native to Alabama and their habitats. The teacher will read the book If I Ran the Zoo by Dr. Seuss or use the digital resource as a read-aloud of the book. The students will then work with a partner to pretend like they are in charge of the zoo and need to build a new animal habitat for an animal native to Alabama. The students will create a drawing of a habitat for an animal native to Alabama.

Use the book Perfect Square by Michael Hall to help "thinking outside the box" skills.

1) Elaborate on an individual or prompted imaginative idea.

Examples: Create an imaginative mask showing his/her personality.
Look at masks from different cultures such as Chinese, African and Native American.

Examples: Create a logo for a school or activity.

Students will analyze a variety of artwork. They will make a list of problems and solutions to creating artwork.  Working in pairs, students will collaborate to create a piece of art.

Example: Compare images that represent the same subject.

Students will analyze the painting, Pansies in Washington, by Alma Thomas. Students will create a color square.  Students can work independently or collaboratively.
