Create rhythms using the Chrome Music Lab and perform them using body percussion and/or instruments.
his activity was created as a result of the Arts COS Resource Development Summit.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the names of the notes on the treble staff by using barred instruments to play skipped notes up and down the instruments. Connecting the letter names of the notes to the instruments helps students understand how line and space notes skip when moving line to line and space to space. This further reinforces their understanding of how notes are arranged on the staff.

Students will identify words that use one sound/syllable and two sounds/syllables. Students will compose 8 beat rhythm patterns using random items from a box. The students will have a fun time making silly rhythm patterns with their random items.
Students will use quarter notes to compose a four-beat melodic pattern using Mi, So, and La. The students will compose a melodic pattern using a modified staff. The students will perform their composition for the class.
Students will use iconic notation to compose four-beat melodic patterns. The icons have the letters S, M, and L to represent So, Mi, and La. After students compose a melodic pattern, they will share their musical composition with the class.
Students will read iconic and traditional notation for So, Mi, and La melodies. Students will transfer iconic notation into traditional notation on a modified music staff.
In this learning activity, students identify rhythms and demonstrate knowledge of note value by drawing them in 16 block grids. Students will need a piece of blank paper and a writing utensil. You can use any song the students know that has familiar rhythms for identification, or you can use the song provided, "Michael Finnegan". The lesson includes great visuals of how to make the 16-block grid.
This resource is a five-day plan to introduce and practice quarter rest. Day 1 prepares quarter rest through singing Eating Muffins. Students will practice quarter notes and eighth notes on Day 2.
