Title: Native Americans: How Their Environment Affected Their Culture
Description:

In this lesson, students will research one Native American group from each of the six main biomes in North America. Students will use their developing technology and language arts skills to find reliable sources on the internet, evaluate and integrate information from these texts, select a suitable digital platform to share their findings, and create a cohesive presentation showcasing their mastery of the learning outcomes. Students will discover the climate, landforms, water, and other natural resources available within each region and how they were used by the natives living there. Students will explore the relationships between the cultures found within each region and its resources. 

This unit was created as part of the ALEX Interdisciplinary Resource Development Summit.

Title: Natural Resources Shared Naturally
Unit Plan Overview: Natural resources provides what living things need to survive and thrive. This unit explores the transfer of energy throughout the food chain, investigates the amounts of rainfall in a region, examines the patterns of Native Americans settling adjacent to water, and guides students as they design animals that would survive in a wet biome. The math, science, history, and language arts lessons included are strong enough to stand alone, but when taught simultaneously, strengthen each of the 5th grade standards. This unit was created as part of the ALEX Interdisciplinary Resource Development Summit.

Description:

The students will share their slideshow on their researched American Indian tribe from the activity "The First Americans: Learning About American Indian Heritage". Students will fill in a chart as other students are presenting. They will use the chart to distinguish between American Indian tribes.

The teacher will share an article about the Pueblo Indians that includes the geography, economic, cultural, belief systems, and community organization of this tribe. After recognizing the elements of this tribe in the article, students will read a similar article on a tribe of their choosing. They will present information about this tribe in a slide show.

Students will look at a picture titled "Portrait of a Flathead Man." They will answer the question, "How does this picture help you understand anything about Native American culture?" This activity will activate students' prior knowledge about American Indians in North America.

Title: Tracking the Buffalo: Stories From a Buffalo Hide Painting

In this activity, students learn about Native American culture by exploring a buffalo hide painting and discovering the meaning behind each picture represented on the buffalo hide. Students compare their interpretations with a Smithsonian Historian. Then, students create a buffalo hide painting to tell their "own meaningful story".
