Recursive or Explicit, Why Not Both? Exit Ticket
Digital Tool/Resource:
Recursive or Explicit, Why Not Both? Exit Ticket
Web Address – URL:
Overview:

This learning activity is an assessment activity that uses an exit ticket to ask students to write both a recursive and explicit formula for a simple application problem.

  Associated Standards and Objectives
Content Standard(s):
Mathematics
MA2019 (2019)
Grade: 9-12
Applications of Finite Math
11. Find patterns in application problems involving series and sequences, and develop recursive and explicit formulas as models to understand and describe sequential change.

Examples: fractals, population growth
Unpacked Content
Evidence Of Student Attainment:
Students:
  • -Use inductive counting methods to find recursive patterns and explicit formulas.
Teacher Vocabulary:
  • Difference equation
  • Recursive process
  • Recursive formula
  • Sequences
  • Series
Knowledge:
Students know:
  • How to use inductive counting methods such as lists.
Skills:
Students are able to:
  • Use inductive counting methods to collect data for conjecturing.
  • Find recursive formulas from collected data.
  • Develop explicit formulas.
Diverse Learning Needs:
Learning Objectives:

The student will demonstrate their understanding of writing explicit and recursive formulas from an application.

  Strategies, Preparations and Variations
Phase:
After/Explain/Elaborate
Activity:

    1. Direct each student to the Recursive or Explicit, Why Not Both? Exit Ticket.
    2. Instruct the students to answer the prompts provided in the activity.
    3. Circulate while students are working and assist with any questions or problems they might encounter.
    4. The teacher should review the responses of the students and correct any misconceptions.
    5. If the majority of students struggle with a common topic, pause the activity, and address the misconception.

Assessment Strategies:

Teachers can collect the exit ticket digitally. Based on responses,  misconceptions or learning gaps can be addressed.

Advanced Preparation:

Prior to the lesson, the teacher should assign the activity through their desired learning platform.

Teachers should anticipate misconceptions that may arise.

Variation Tips (optional):

A PDF version of the exit ticket can be printed from the google slide and a paper version can be printed and distributed to students.

Notes or Recommendations (optional):

This activity corresponds to the "Before" activity Engaging Square Patterns and the "During" activity Recursive and Explicit Equation Card Sort.
