  Strategies, Preparations and Variations
Phase:
Before/Engage
Activity:

The teacher will instruct the student to access the Jamboard. The teacher will ask:

  • What is a noun?
  • What is a verb?
  • Give me an example of an adjective.
  • What suffix is commonly at the end of an adverb?

After the quick review, the teacher will instruct the student to complete the word sort, individually or in pairs.

The students will move each sticky note under the correct part of speech.

After students complete the activity, the teacher will ask:

  • What do you notice about the nouns? Are there any common prefixes or suffixes?
  • The teacher will continue to ask these types of questions for each part of speech.
Assessment Strategies:

This activity would be most appropriate for a formative assessment at the beginning of a unit on affixes. If a student cannot correctly identify a part of speech based on word parts like "tion", "ly" and "ed" then the teacher will know that some review lessons will need to happen.

Advanced Preparation:

Teachers will share the Jamboard with students. Teachers will share the Jamboard via the online classroom platform of their choice.

Variation Tips (optional):

This could be completed as a whole group. The teacher would project the Jamboard.

This activity could also be completed in pairs.

Notes or Recommendations (optional):

This activity can stand alone or be used as a Before/Engage activity for the following learning activities:

Wacky Words: Prefixes, Roots, and Suffixes (during activity)
