Word Expert: Perimeter and Area on the Coordinate Plane
A Learning Activity is a strategy a teacher chooses to actively
engage students in learning a concept or skill using a digital tool/resource.
You may save this Learning Activity to your hard drive as an .html file by
selecting “File”,then “Save As” from your browser’s
pull down menu. The file name extension must be .html.
Phase:
Before/Engage
Activity:
The teacher will upload the Word Expert Google Slideshow to a learning platform that will allow every student to edit the Google Slide presentation, such as Google Classroom.
Each group of students will create a poster for their assigned word using the uploaded Google Slides presentation. The word assignments are on the Google Slideshow (see Slide 6): slope, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, perimeter, area, and distance along a line segment. The poster must include the following information: Vocabulary Word, Essential Characteristics, Example, and Non-Example.
Each group must post a link to their poster on the appropriate slide of this activity.
Finally, each group will provide collective feedback to three predetermined groups using one of the assigned prompts:
I would suggest...
I would like to know...
This is strong because...
To conclude this activity, teachers may pose the following discussion questions to students via an online learning platform or during face-to-face instruction:
Why do you think gaining a better understanding of the vocabulary words in this activity will prepare you to compute the perimeters of polygons and the area of triangles and rectangles in the coordinate plane?
How does this activity make you feel more accountable for quality work?
Assessment Strategies:
The group posters and class discussion will serve as an assessment to identify mastery of an understanding of geometry words/skills that are prerequisites for computing perimeters of polygons and the area of triangles and rectangles in the coordinate plane.
Advanced Preparation:
Students will need internet access and a device.
The activity will need to be shared with students on an online learning platform such as Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.

18. Given the coordinates of the vertices of a polygon, compute its perimeter and area using a variety of methods, including the distance formula and dynamic geometry software, and evaluate the accuracy of the results.
