Phase:
During/Explore/Explain
Activity:
Look at the image posted on the board. (Images may be retrieved from the Famous Artists Gallery website.)
Students may come up to the board to look closely at the picture.
A student will pick 3 items they see in the picture.
Then the teacher asks one student, "What is 1 thing you notice about each item?"
That student (or teacher) then calls on another student.
That student has to make an observation or draw a conclusion about the item the other student found in the picture.
This is done 3 times.
This strategy allows students to examine a piece of artwork closely to interpret the artwork and identify the subject matter and describe the details.
Assessment Strategies:
The teacher will facilitate the lesson and strategy while listening to the students' interpretations. The teacher will guide the students if needed and take anecdotal notes of students who are struggling to interpret and identify the subject matter of the painting.
