  Strategies, Preparations and Variations
Phase:
During/Explore/Explain
Activity:

*Students will take turns either being a doctor or a patient for an unrehearsed conversation at an imaginary doctor’s visit with a partner.

*The partner taking on the role of the patient draws a common illness or injury out of a basket or cup and must complete the dialogue as if they are dealing with the complaint they drew.

*The partner taking on the role of the doctor must ask the patient about their basic information (birthdate, age, address, phone number) and symptoms, and give suggested remedies based on the complaints the patient expresses.

*The students will only have a note card with a list of required topics to cover as they complete the dialogue.

*The students should first do 2 practice rounds so that they have a chance to perform each role in the dialogue.

*Finally the students should choose a new illness or injury, choose a role to play, and record their conversation for an interpersonal speaking assessment. Students may use Voice Memos on their phones or another recording software or website. Students will submit their recordings to the teacher for assessment.

Assessment Strategies:

Formally assess whether the students can participate in a conversation in the target language about their health symptoms with a variety of words, phrases, and simple sentences in the past time frame. Use a rubric that checks for the inclusion of all required information and determines whether the student is speaking at the Novice High, Intermediate Low, or Intermediate Mid level. The rubric should examine the complexity of sentence structure, the variety of vocabulary, grammatical accuracy as it corresponds to comprehensibility, fluency, and pronunciation.

Advanced Preparation:

Teachers should:

*write illnesses and injuries on small note cards for students to draw out of a basket or cup.

*choose optimal partners or groups of 3.

*create the rubric to assess the recorded dialogue.
