Phase: | During/Explore/Explain, After/Explain/Elaborate |
Activity: | During or after a lesson on converting within a system of measurement, students can practice skills individually or with a partner on the specific interactive the teacher has taught. The customary interactives are on the left-hand side and the metric interactives on the right. Depending on the sequence that the teacher chooses to teach these skills, students may need to practice only on one side or the other, or only on a given skill (length, volume, mass) within both systems of measurement. Students will need to have mastery of these skills before solving real-world problems involving conversions. Students may initially choose to play each interactive in relaxed mode and then timed mode for a challenge. |
Assessment Strategies: | Students should be able to use the skills obtained in the lesson and practiced in the interactives to solve real-world problems. Assess student mastery with a combination of skills in isolation, and then through application such as this activity. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1h5DSnI9dKEBKjTxQWj0asbELda3XPhXXhmd0L8HM6uo/edit?usp=sharing |
Advanced Preparation: | The teacher should practice using the interactives and ensure students have compatible devices. *These interactives are not comprehensive of all units of customary measurement. It does not ask students to practice capacity conversions with fluid ounces, cups, gallons, or pints. It does not ask students to practice mass conversions with tons. Teachers will need to provide additional opportunities for students to practice these conversions. |
