Title: Recognizing the Value of Cultural Influence in Literature
Description:

This is a Slide Show and Infographic that can be used for whole-class instruction or as a guideline for questions to ask when evaluating how an author's cultural perspective influences style, language, and themes. The slides guide teachers to instruct students on how to think about how a creator's cultural background is important in fully understanding the message of their work.

 

This learning activity can be used as a stand-alone activity or a Before Activity, the During and After activities can be found in the Notes or Recommendations section.

Title: Making Connections: An Author's Culture and the Text
Description:

Following the introduction to the CULTURE model through the Slide Show and the introduction to the Infographic, students previously worked in teams to evaluate sources using the CULTURE model. This activity is intended to assess students' understanding of how to make connections between an author's culture and their text in order to facilitate a deeper understanding of the choices that an author makes in terms of style, language, and theme. Student observations are recorded on a graphic organizer and submitted to the teacher for evaluation.

 

This learning activity can be used as a stand-alone activity but is best used as an After Activity, the Before and During Activities can be found in the Tools or Recommendations section.

Title: Recognizing the Value of Cultural Influence in Literature, Group Evaluation
Description:

Following an introduction to the CULTURE model lesson, this lesson will allow students to work with a partner to evaluate the speaker of work in terms of the CULTURE acronym. The follow-up activities in this learning activity will work to connect elements of the text to the cultural reflections students made regarding the speaker. Student observations are recorded on graphic organizers.

This learning activity can be used as a stand-alone activity but is best used as a During Activity, the Before and After Activities can be found in the Tools or Recommendations section.
